Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Barnsley
A nest high on the roof edge raises a practical question: how will anyone reach it? Understanding access helps you describe the job and know what to expect on the phone.
Height changes the practical picture
A wasp nest tucked behind the fascia of a single-storey garage and one at the top of a tall gable end are the same problem to the wasps and quite different jobs for anyone dealing with them. The colony behaves in the same way in both. What changes is how the nest is reached, and whether the person doing it can work safely.
Most nests at roof level can be reached with the kind of equipment a technician carries as a matter of course. Occasionally, the position of the nest needs something more, and that is the one situation in which the price can differ from our usual figure. Understanding the difference in advance means no surprises when you phone.
If you are in Barnsley and have wasps at the roof edge, a few minutes spent gathering the right information will make the call quicker and the quote clearer.
It is also worth remembering that wasps do not choose the easy spots. A queen is looking for a dry, sheltered gap, and she does not consider whether a person will be able to reach it later. That is why so many roofline nests turn up in places that are a nuisance to get to, such as above a porch roof or beside a chimney stack.
Describing the location accurately
From the ground, look at the building and answer a few simple questions in your head before you pick up the phone:
- Is the activity on the main roof, a porch, an extension, a garage or an outbuilding?
- Roughly how many storeys up is it? Comparing it with the window below is enough.
- Is there something underneath that makes it awkward to get close, such as a conservatory roof, a greenhouse, a pond, steep ground or a parked vehicle?
- Can a vehicle or equipment get to that side of the building, or is it reached through a narrow passage or someone else’s garden?
- Is it on a shared roofline with a neighbour?
None of these answers will put anyone off. They are simply the details that help work out whether ordinary equipment will do or whether something extra is needed.
If you can, take two photos from the ground: one wide shot that shows the whole side of the building, and one zoomed in on the area where the wasps are going. The wide shot shows height and surroundings, and the close one shows the gap. Send or describe them when you book.
How the price works
The Wasp Exterminator charges a fixed £70 to treat a wasp nest. The size of the nest does not change that figure, and neither does the time of day or the day of the week, because we work seven days a week and there is no call-out charge. If you have a second nest on the same property, that is an additional £25 on top.
The one exception is access. In a difficult area where special access equipment is needed to reach the nest, the price might be more. The price is confirmed on the phone before the technician visits, so you always know the figure first, and nothing is done unless you agree to it.
That clarity is the point of describing the location carefully. The more precisely you can tell us where the wasps are going, the sooner you will know whether the standard price applies.
Please also tell us if the nest turns out to be somewhere different from what you first thought. People often assume the fascia and then discover the wasps are using a soffit vent or a gap higher up, and that is fine. The technician will confirm the position on arrival and let you know if anything changes, before any work starts.
What to do while waiting for the visit
Same-day service is available, but if the technician cannot arrive immediately, it is worth limiting contact with the area. Keep children and pets away from that side of the house and keep the nearest windows closed. Avoid hanging washing or leaving food and drinks out where the wasps pass.
Do not try to reach the nest yourself with a long pole, a hose, or a ladder. It may seem to be a short stretch, but at that height you are exposed, and a disturbed nest can empty quickly. A fall is a much greater danger than a sting.
If anyone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if it is visible, and use a cold pack. Call 999 if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash. Anyone who knows they are allergic should speak to their GP about what to do.
Pets deserve a mention. Dogs that spend time in the garden can be drawn to investigate the buzzing, so keep them on the far side of the house or indoors until the visit is done.
Booking and afterwards
Ring 07798 792 774, or use the online booking form or contact page. The technician for your area gets a text and email alert straight away, whichever day it is. Our technicians are fully insured and qualified, and we deal with both domestic and commercial properties, including premises where customers or staff come and go below the roof edge.
After the nest has been treated, ask whether the empty nest can be taken down. When access to the roof edge is awkward, it makes sense to arrange any gap repair at the same time as other work at height, such as gutter cleaning or fascia replacement, so that scaffolding or equipment is only needed once. A builder or roofer can advise on this.
If the roof edge sits over a boundary with a neighbour, a conversation over the fence before the visit usually saves time on the day.
