Why Are Wasps Flying Into Your Kirk Sandall Home? Common Causes and Solutions

Late in the year, wasps lose their jobs and find a taste for sugar, so they turn up in houses just when you thought the season was over.

Why autumn feels worse

Many people notice that wasps become more of a nuisance after August, even as the numbers in the garden fall. There is a reason. Through the summer, workers are busy feeding the larvae in the nest, and they gather protein to do it. As the season turns, the queen stops laying and the grubs that used to make demands are gone. Workers have less to do, and their interest shifts to sugar for themselves.

That means more wasps hanging around drinks, ripe fruit and bins, and more wandering into houses where those things are found. They also seem less purposeful, which can make them irritable.

You may also notice wasps in places they were absent in July, such as the garden table at tea time or around the picnic bench. That is the change in diet at work.

What changes in the colony

The colony peaks in August and then declines. New queens leave to find a place to spend winter, the old queen dies and the workers gradually fade as the temperature drops. It is a process, not a sudden event, and it can run into October in a mild year.

The effect on you is practical. The nest may still be active when you start closing up the house for the cooler months, and the workers are often more likely to explore a warm room than they were in July. A wasp that seems slow and sleepy on a window ledge can still sting if it is trapped against skin or clothing.

Garden changes matter too. Fruit trees drop windfalls, leaves cover the ground and bins are fuller after summer clearing. Each of these gives a worker with spare time something to do.

Where you will find them

In autumn the same few places crop up again and again.

A queen that wanders into a house in October is searching for somewhere to spend winter, not starting a nest. She will be sluggish and is best carried outside in a glass.

If you find a number of wasps around a window, ask whether a nest could be in the wall or loft above it. Several wasps in the same room, day after day, is not typical autumn wandering.

Sensible autumn steps

A handful of habits keep things calm.

  1. Pick up fallen fruit every day and keep it away from the house.
  2. Rinse cans, bottles and jars before putting them out.
  3. Keep outdoor food and drink covered, and bring cups inside after use.
  4. Close windows in the afternoon, when the sun warms the glass and the wasps are most active.
  5. Shake out curtains and check coats stored by the door before wearing.

If you find a wasp indoors, do not crush it. Cover it with a glass, slide card underneath and take it outside. If someone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if you can see it, and apply a cold pack. Serious signs, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash, mean calling 999.

Keep an eye on stored items too. Hanging coats, folded blankets and garden cushions brought inside for winter can carry a hidden queen. Shake them out in the open air before you bring them in.

Is the nest still worth treating?

It depends on where it is and how active it looks. A nest in a hedge at the far end of the garden that no one visits can often be left to die off naturally. A nest in the eaves, above a door, in a wall cavity or near a window is another matter, because the wasps are most likely to come inside from there.

If you can see wasps flying in a steady line to one spot even in October, the colony is still going. Likewise, if you are finding wasps in rooms with closed windows, a nest may be inside the structure. In either case, it is sensible to ask for a visit rather than put up with weeks of intrusion in Kirk Sandall or anywhere else.

Bear in mind that a late nest is often easier to treat than a mid-summer one, because there are fewer wasps. That is not a reason to delay if the nest is by a door or window, but it is a reassurance if you have only just found it.

Do not be tempted to wait for the first frost if wasps are entering your living space now. Frosts can be weeks away, and a house with wasps in it is no fun in the meantime.

Booking and what to expect

The Wasp Exterminator charges a fixed £70 per nest, with no call-out charge, and £25 extra for another nest on the same property. The price is agreed by phone ahead of the visit. No work is done without your agreement, and the price might be more where special access equipment is needed to reach the nest.

We are open seven days a week and offer same-day service. You can phone 07798 792 774, or use the booking form or contact page. Tell us how late-season activity has changed, where wasps are entering and whether anyone in the household is allergic. We can then plan the visit.

Treatment also gives peace of mind going into winter. Once a nest in or on the house has been dealt with, you can close up for the cooler months without wondering what is behind the wall.

Frequently asked questions

Why are wasps attracted to my drinks more in autumn?
With fewer grubs to feed, workers seek sugar for themselves. Cover drinks and check cans and cups before sipping.
Is a single sleepy wasp indoors a nest?
No. It is more likely a worker or a queen looking for warmth. Catch it gently under a glass and release it outside.
Will the cold kill the nest on its own?
Colonies decline as winter approaches and the nest is not reused, but until then the wasps remain active, so nests near the house are best treated.
