How to Tell If You Have an Active Wasp Nest on Your Rotherham Property

Outbuildings are among the most overlooked places for nests. Here is how to check sheds, garages and lean-tos safely, from the outside, without disturbing a colony.

Why outbuildings are favourite spots

Sheds, garages, summerhouses and lean-tos are warm, dry, quiet and full of gaps. They are also visited rarely, so a nest can grow for weeks before anyone notices. By the time someone opens the door to fetch a lawnmower, there may already be a large colony inside.

Householders and small businesses in Rotherham and across South Yorkshire often find the first sign is a wasp or two inside the shed, or a person being stung on opening the door. A short outside check, done calmly, can prevent that.

Business owners with storerooms, yards and outbuildings should treat them in the same way, and make sure staff know whom to tell if they see wasps going in and out of a building.

A safe check from the outside

Start on the outside, at a distance, on a warm day. Walk slowly around the building and look at each corner, at the join between the walls and the roof, around window frames, under the door and along any vent or pipe that goes through the wall.

If you see traffic of this sort, do not open the door to find out more. Opening the door disturbs the air and can send alarmed wasps straight at you.

A tidy shed with a clear floor is easier to check and safer to enter later. Even so, the outside check always comes first, and any sign of wasps should keep you from opening the door until the nest has been treated.

Garages, lofts over garages and lean-tos

Garages with a roof space above are very similar to lofts. Nests may be built against the underside of the roof, in a gap above the door, or behind stored items. A nest on the inside may only be visible from outside as a stream of wasps going through a damaged tile or a gap in the facia.

Lean-tos against a house wall can hide a nest between the two structures. If you see wasps at the top of the join where the lean-to meets the house, the nest could be in the cavity. Do not push anything into the gap to test it.

If someone has been inside, a few clues are worth passing on. A buzzing that grows louder near the roof, wasps gathering at a window, dead wasps on the floor or the sill, and a papery patch on a beam or in a corner are all indications. Mention them to the technician, and keep everyone out in the meantime.

Tell anyone who shares the building, such as family, tenants or colleagues, that it is out of bounds until the technician has been. A note on the door is a simple way to do it.

Things you may have stored inside

Stored items give wasps additional places to hide: folded tarpaulins, old cushions, cardboard boxes, garden furniture, bags of compost and tools hanging from the wall. A nest may be attached to a beam or tucked behind a stack of timber.

Before the summer, it is sensible to keep the entrance clear and leave the door closed when not in use. If you must go in, go early or late when wasps are less active and look through a window first. But if you have seen any signs of wasps, do not enter at all until the position is clear.

In a commercial setting, such as a unit, storeroom or yard, tell staff not to enter the affected building and restrict access to the area.

Taking the right precautions during a check

Dress sensibly even for a short walk round the outside. Closed shoes, long trousers and a calm pace are enough, and there is no need for improvised protective gear, which can give false confidence. If you are allergic to stings, do not carry out the check at all and ask someone else to describe what they see.

Keep the route behind you free so that you can walk away without tripping on tools, hoses or toys. Check with household members first, so nobody wanders in while you are looking.

If a wasp lands on you, stay still or brush it away gently and move away slowly. Do not crush it near the entrance, as that can attract others. Having a firm plan before you start keeps a routine check from turning into an emergency.

Getting an outbuilding nest dealt with

Say clearly which building it is, where on the building the entrance appears to be, and whether there is a ladder or special access issue, for example if the roof is high or the entrance is above a fragile roof. The price might be higher where special access equipment is needed, and you will hear about this before any work.

Otherwise treatment of a nest is a fixed £70 per nest, a further nest on the same property is £25 extra, there is no call-out charge and the technician can attend seven days a week, with same-day visits offered. You can book through the online form or by calling 07798 792 774. Nothing is done unless you agree.

Ask the technician at booking whether the empty nest can be taken down after treatment.

If the building is rented or shared, tell the owner or manager what you have seen, and check your tenancy or insurance paperwork if you are unsure who should arrange the work. That is a question for those documents rather than for us.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to open a shed door if I suspect wasps?
No. Opening the door can alarm the colony. Check from outside and keep the door shut until the nest has been dealt with.
Can a wasp nest be inside a garage roof?
Yes. Roof spaces and gaps above doors are favoured sites, and traffic through a damaged tile or fascia is a clue.
Do you treat nests at commercial premises?
Yes, domestic and commercial sites are both covered, at the same fixed price per nest unless special access equipment is needed.
