Are Wasps Dangerous? Understanding Stings and Nest Disturbance in Sheffield

Nests in outbuildings and wall cavities are easy to disturb by accident because people keep walking past them. Here is how to spot the danger and manage it safely.

Why outbuildings are a risk

Sheds, garages, summerhouses and outdoor stores offer a queen everything she wants: shelter, dry timber and plenty of quiet corners. They are also places people visit without thinking, to fetch a bike, a spade or a tin of paint. That combination is what makes them so awkward. You are not looking for wasps when you open the door, and by the time you notice them you may already be inside their flight path.

The same applies to wall cavities, porch roofs, air bricks and the underside of decking. A nest hidden in one of these places gives little warning until traffic builds up in the summer months. The point of this article is to help you notice the early signs and to behave sensibly around them, not to alarm you.

Clues you can see and hear

Before opening an outbuilding in summer, pause on the path and use your eyes and ears for a moment.

Any of these is reason enough to leave the door shut. Fetching the lawnmower can wait. If you have already opened the door and wasps are streaming around you, back out, close it behind you and walk away from the building. Do not stand in the doorway batting at them.

A sensible household rule is that anyone going into a shed or garage between spring and autumn takes thirty seconds to look first.

What happens when a nest is disturbed indoors

A nest inside a closed space presents a particular problem: when the guards are alarmed, the wasps have a very short distance to travel to reach you, and the doorway is usually narrow. It can also be difficult to see them in dim light. People tend to be stung on the face, neck and hands, and in a panic they may fall over stored items.

If this happens, the priority is to get yourself and anyone with you away and out into fresh air. Close the door if you can do so without delay. Once you are clear, check for stings in hair and under clothing, wash them, remove any that are still in the skin and use a cold pack on the swollen areas.

Call 999 if anyone has swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash. This is general guidance, not medical advice.

Living with a nest you cannot avoid

Sometimes the nest is in a structure you cannot simply stop using, such as the garage where the car is kept, or a wall by the back door. Until it has been treated, reduce contact as far as you can.

  1. Put a note on the door so that every member of the household and any visitors know not to use it.
  2. Use another entrance and keep windows near the nest shut.
  3. Keep children and pets out of the area entirely.
  4. Do not seal the hole or fill it with foam or filler, since trapped wasps may chew through to the inside of the building.
  5. Do not try to smoke them out or spray into the opening.

If bins or compost heaps stand near the building, move them if you can do so without going near the entrance. Sweet waste draws extra wasps to the neighbourhood and can make the situation more crowded than it needs to be.

Arranging treatment

For a nest in an outbuilding or wall in Sheffield or the surrounding area, The Wasp Exterminator offers treatment at a fixed £70 per nest. If there is another nest on the same property it costs £25 extra, and we make no call-out charge. We are open seven days a week and offer same-day service, and our technician is fully insured and qualified.

We give you the price on the phone before the visit. It might be higher where the nest sits somewhere that needs special access equipment, for example high on a gable end, and no work starts until you have agreed. Domestic and commercial premises are both covered.

To book, use the online booking form or the contact page, or ring 07798 792 774. Tell us where the entrance is, whether the building is attached to your house, and when you last saw activity. Afterwards, ask whether the empty nest can be removed.

Preventing a repeat in the building

A nest that has been treated will not be reused, but a new queen the following spring may be attracted to the same sort of space. Once the nest is gone, take a look at the building in the cooler months. Check for gaps around eaves, door frames and vents, and consider repairs or a closer fit for doors and hatches. Keep sheds tidy, because piles of stored items make shady corners easier to use. Where wood is rotting or fascia boards have warped, a repair in the autumn is far better than a surprise in the spring.

Neighbours matter too. If a nest was in a shared wall, fence or hedge, let the people next door know, as a queen does not recognise boundaries and the same line of buildings may offer similar gaps.

Take care not to block anything until you are sure the colony has finished; the technician can tell you when it is safe to do so. A short walk round each spring is all it takes.

Frequently asked questions

Should I open my shed to check for a nest?
Not if you can see wasps going in and out of it. Watch from the path for a few minutes and, if the traffic is steady, leave the door closed and ask for help.
Can wasps get into the house from a nest in the wall?
They can, through small gaps around pipes, vents or light fittings. Keep the nearest rooms closed off and do not seal the entrance outside.
Is a nest in the garage more dangerous than one outside?
The risk is greater because the space is confined and you may be close before you notice. Treat any garage with wasp traffic as a no-go area.
